Scoring pace picks up at 2017 USBC Women’s Championships
The leaderboards at the 2017 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships have a new look as the tournament begins to settle in at the Raising Cane’s River Center.
In Diamond Doubles, a pair of bowlers from the Pelican State moved to the top of the standings as Kateri Celestin of New Orleans and Keosha Moore of Walker, Louisiana, posted a 1,243 total May 3. Moore led the duo with 666, and Celestin added 577.
A day earlier, two past USBC Women’s Championships titlists again found their stride on the championship lanes as Joeia Moore of North East, Maryland, and Jean Hall of Elkton, Maryland, took the Amethyst Doubles lead with a 919 total. Moore and Hall helped Alley Gators II win the 1998 Division III Team title, and the pair put together a consistent effort as Hall led the way with 465 and Moore added 454.
Diamond Doubles consists of bowlers with combined entering averages of 380 and above, while Amethyst Doubles features bowlers with entering averages of 260-289.
Jillian Schneider of Dayton, Ohio, saved her best for last as she moved into the Amethyst Singles lead May 5 with a 519 series. Schneider began her set with games of 167 and 162 before posting 190 in her finale.
Renzie Kintzler of Cheyenne, Wyoming, moved into the top spot in Ruby All-Events with a 1,707 total on May 2-3. She had sets of 647 in team, 578 in singles and 482 in doubles to post her leading total.
Robin Miles of Alberta, Minnesota, raised the bar in Amethyst All-Events on April 28-29 as she fired a 1,481 total. Miles, who finished third in Division IV All-Events at the 2009 Women’s Championships in Reno, Nevada, rolled sets of 512 in team, 492 in doubles and 477 in singles.
Bonnie Ryan of Price, Utah, took over the top spot in Topaz All-Events on May 3-4 with a 1,301 total. Ryan’s sets included 463 in doubles, 428 in singles and 410 in team.
Ruby All-Events includes bowlers with entering averages of 175-189, and Amethyst All-Events features bowlers with entering averages of 130-144. Topaz All-Events is for bowlers with entering averages of 129 and below.
A look ahead
Three bowlers are scheduled to make their 50th USBC Women’s Championships appearance this week.
Greta Kozar of Chamblee, Georgia, will be the first to reach the milestone as she makes her 50th consecutive appearance May 6 at 9 p.m. Eastern. Kozar began her tournament career at the 1968 event in San Antonio.
Hope Williams of Tucson, Arizona, also started her Women’s Championships career in 1968 and will make her 50th consecutive trip to the world’s largest participatory sporting event for women May 10 at 6 p.m. Eastern.
Elaine Rebatzke of Milwaukee will make her 50th appearance May 11 at 6 p.m. Eastern. Rebatzke made her Women’s Championships debut at the 1963 event in Memphis, Tennessee.
