Two bowlers compete in USBC Women’s Championships for 50th time
Christina Polinski of Carter Lake, Iowa, and Marilyn Davidson of Sunset Beach, North Carolina, each celebrated their 50th tournament appearances during the opening week of the 2017 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships.
Polinski was the first to achieve the feat at the Raising Cane’s River Center, making her way to the lanes April 24, and Davidson made her appearance April 27. They each received a plaque, chevron and necklace to commemorate their longevity on the championship lanes.
Polinski started her USBC Women’s Championships career at the 1955 event in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 12. She was the oldest member of the team, and the combined age of the five participants was 54.
Overall, Polinski has competed in 35 cities and 24 states during her Women’s Championships career, and her dedication to the sport has helped her into the Nebraska USBC, Greater Omaha Area USBC and Council Bluffs USBC Halls of Fame.
“I had no idea then I’d be bowling this long,” said Polinski, who rolled sets of 509 in team, 480 in singles and 441 in doubles for a 1,430 all-events score. “My mother put me with my two sisters, a cousin and a friend on a team to compete just for the fun of it.”
Despite battling health issues leading up to her tournament appearance, Davidson was determined to make her 50th appearance.
Davidson began her tournament career at the 1961 Women’s Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and she has made the event an annual trip since 1977. She’s visited 36 cities and 26 states during her time at the event, with her 25th appearance, a homecoming to her native central Michigan, serving as a personal favorite.
“I received my 25-year award during the 1992 tournament in Lansing, Michigan,” said Davidson, who rolled sets of 294 in singles, 292 in doubles and 230 in team for an 816 all-events total. “I am proud to be the first woman to reach this milestone from my hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan.”
Ohio bowler uses big final game to take Ruby Singles lead in Baton Rouge
Tashia Blue of Hamilton, Ohio, started her final game of singles at the Raising Cane’s River Center with seven consecutive strikes on her way to a 249 finish and 653 series to set the bar in Ruby Singles on April 26.
Fighting plantar fasciitis throughout her 2017 appearance, Blue started her singles set with games of 220 and 184 before the big finish. She left a 2-5 combination in the eighth frame to end her quest to become the 26th bowler in USBC Women’s Championships history to roll a perfect game.
Terri Ward of Loveland, Colorado, set the pace in Diamond All-Events on April 28 with a 1,799 total at the River Center.
The 2015 Triple Crown Shoot-Out winner started her run with a 663 series in team and added sets of 591 in doubles and 545 in singles to conclude her 2017 event.
Ruby Singles features bowlers with entering averages of 175-189. Diamond All-Events includes bowlers with averages of 190 and above.
