The ninth stop on the 2019 ISBT tour was the only stop in the UK, at Stroud Bowl in Gloucestershire. In total, 61 men and 15 women took part, with only 14 bowlers from overseas competing.
The tournament was played on the Kegel Stone Street pattern. The format for the tournament was a single 6 game qualifying block, with unlimited re-entries. For those not able to qualify through the main leaderboard, there were additional opportunities through Turbo games, Scratch and Early Bird qualification. Age bonus started at age 51 (1 pin per game), then increased a pin for every additional year of age with no limit. As with all ISBT events, there was a separate division for ladies.
The tournament had squads from Wednesday through to Saturday, and the first day leader in the men’s section was Auke Broekhuizen from the Netherlands with 1442, ahead of Lol Ellis from England with 1394. Sandra Boswell from England was top lady with 1140.
Thursday had three squads and saw Rob Oldfield from England take top spot with 1458, just ahead of Paul Stott from Ireland. In the ladies’ section, Lynne Walker from Wales led with 1250, ahead of Liliane Vintens from Belgium. This concluded the early bird rankings, with some players now guaranteed places in the finals.
There were a further three squads on Friday, with Alan Jenkins from England leading the way with a huge 1571 score, well ahead of Roger Pieters from Belgium. Veronique Perniaux from Belgium posted the first score over 1300 in the ladies’ section with 1304, ahead of a great block by Sue Cobb from England.
There were three final squads starting early on Saturday morning, with Steve Carnell from England making sure of his qualification place with a 1511 block, ahead of Paul Stott. Mixed fortunes for Mark Wills from England, who started the final block with a great 300 game, but then missed the qualification cut by only 11 pins. In the ladies’ section, the highest qualifying block was by Angie Brown from England with 1325, ahead of Kimberley Oakley with 1291.
The final qualifying list was led by Alan Jenkins with 1571, ahead of Steve Carnell and Roger Pieters. The cut for 24th place was Ken Burton from England with 1387. Two Early Birds, two Scratch and four Turbo qualifiers made the number of men’s finalists up to 32.
The ladies cut was 1248 from Sue Cobb, the overall lead going to Angie Brown with 1325, ahead of Veronique Perniaux and Kimberley Oakley. Two Early Birds and two Turbo qualifiers made the number of ladies’ finalists up to ten.
All the men bowled the first final round of four games early on Sunday morning, with Steve Carnell posting 1031, ahead of Ron Oldfield and Steven Jeeves. The top 18 would progress to the next round with pinfall carrying forward, last man was Alan Jenkins with 875.
The top 18 then bowled a further four games, with pinfall carrying through. The top four would progress to the grand final, Ron Oldfield led the all-English field with 1920, ahead of Mike Halliwell, Steve Carnell and Cliff Dew.
The final rounds were single game elimination, with the lowest player leaving the competition after each game. Steve Carnell was first to go, followed by Cliff Dew. In the final match, Ron Oldfield’s 256 was easily enough to defeat Mike Halliwell.
In the ladies’ division, Kimberley Oakley from England won the four game final round with 846. She would be joined in the grand final by Veronique Perniaux, Liliane Vintens and Catherine Wills.
In the first final round, Catherine Wills was lowest with 201 and so finished in fourth position. In the next round, Veronique Perniaux was the clear winner with a 269 game, and Liliane Vintens was next to leave the competion. The final match was close, but a strong finish by Kimberley Oakley gave her the win over Veronique Perniaux 218-209.
