Men’s Singles
The Men’s singles started on Sunday morning with the first of two six game blocks. Making the early running and holding on until the end was Germany’s Michael Kramer with a European record 1434. Second was Italy’s Marco Reviglio on 1386 and Sweden’s Peter Hellstrom in third with 1348. Taking fourth was Germany’s Bodo Koniecny with 1327 and just ahead off England’s Matt Trotter on 1324.
The second squad saw much excitement as a number of athletes closed in on the top four from the previous squad. England’s Steve Thornton came the closest in the end and tied on 1327 but out on lower last game. Germany’s Holger Ohlrogge also coming close with 1323. No changes then and through to the finals went the top four from squad one.
Sweden vs Italy and al all German semi final in the mens singles and Peter Hellstrom making it through by beating Italy’s Marco Reviglio 207-188 as Bodo Koniecny defeated team mate Michael Kramer 233-206. Joy for Sweden as Peter Hellstrom then went on to beat Gemany’s Bodo Koniecny 206-191 to claim Gold.
Women’s Singles
Monday saw the turn of the Women for six games of singles over two blocks and taking the lead after block one was Germany’s Antje Materne who shot a championships record high game of 278 ending with a fine 1301 and some way infront of second placed Linda Haglund from Sweden with 1221. Third was Germany’s Michaela Gobel-Janka with 1209 and fourth went to England’s Sally WIlson with 1159.
The second squad saw just one new face in the top four as Spain’s Ingrid Julia moved up to second with 1264 and joining Germany’s Antje Materne, Sweden’s Linda Haglund and Germany’s Michaela Gobel-Janka
Spain vs Sweden and an all German semi final in Leipzig and the home fans at least would have one athlete in the final no matter what. Sweden’s Linda Haglund defeated Spain’s Ingrid Julia by just a single pin 190-189 and joined by Michaela Gobel-Janka who beat team mate Antje Materne 205-166. The final was close and going down the the final frames and the home crowd joyus as Michaela Gobel-Janka claimed Gold 190-179 against Sweden’s Linda Haglund and avenging the previous day when Sweden pipped Germany to gold in the men’s singles.
Men’s Doubles
Tuesday was doubles day for the men and in the first squad of the day there were no shocks to seeing Sweden and Germany going well. Sweden topping the block with 2754 including a good 1400 from Martin Paulsson. Germany in second with 2677 and an even better 1441 from Bodo Koniecny. The Netherlands placed third with 2560 and Italy in fourth with 2516.
Just one due managed to break into the top four after the second squad of the day and no surprise it was Sweden’s Johan Aberg and Magnus Lindqvist with 2571 and into third overall, pushing Italy out of the top four. Through went the two Swedish pairs, Germany and the Netherlands.
Sweden vs Germany and Sweden vs the Netherlands in our Men’s doubles semi finals and two chances for the scandinavians to advance. One made it and one went out as the Netherland’s pair of Ron Van Den Bogaard and Wim Van Der Veen edged out Martin Paulsson and Peter Hellstrom 394-392 but Sweden’s other duo of Johan Aberg and Magnus Lindqvist advanced by beating Bodi Koneicny and Michael Kramer in another close match 385-377.
The final was close until Wim Van der Veen started making a run of strikes for the Dutch and ending with 254 and together with Ron Van Den Bogaard’s 213, their 467 was more than enough to take Gold. Sweden with 372 in replay and Silver for Johan Aberg and Magnus Lindqvist.
Women’s Doubles
Women’s Wednesday doubles started at 10am in Lweipzig and home fans happy to see Michaela Gobel-Janka Antje Materne topping the first block with 2426 followed by France with 2337, Finland in third with 2286 and Sweden fourth with 2252 with one block to go.
after the second squad of the day it was Finland and the Czech Republic Joining Germany and France in the finals after Tuula Tamminen and Reija Lunden fired 2316 for third and Jana Lebrova and Ivana Fojtikova shot 2310 for fourth.
In the semi finals it was Germany vs the Czech Republic and France vs Finland. The top two seeds made it through as the Germans beat the Czechs 435-373 and joined in the finals by France who beat out the Finns 361-338.
Germany had been strong all week so far and yet agin they did enough to claim a Gold. Antje Materne with 185 and Michaela Gobel-Janka with 168 for 353 to the Frence pairs 321.
Team
Thursday was day one of two for the team event and up first were the men on the Leipzig lanes for the first three games. Italy making the early running and toppig the tree with 2680 and a fine 691 from Marco Reviglio. Sweden placed second with 2495 as Malta placed third with 2493 and England were fourth on 2453 just ahaead of Finland on 2451.
The Women were next up on Thursday and Belgium taking the top spot after three games with 2311 and a good 634 from Linda Van Kerkhove. Germany in second place with 2256 and Denmark in third on 2238. Italy holding the fourth spot overnight with 2211.
The Women were first up on Friday for day two of the team event and games 4-6 and all change as Denmark rose to the top of the tree with 4463 with Germany second on 4450, Italy third with 4450 and eqrly leaders Belgium down to fourth with 4439 and all through to the team finals.
Team Finals
Italy vs England and Sweden vs Finland in the mens semi finals and Denmark vs Belgium and Germany vs Italy in the woens Semi’s and very hard to predict which would go through but Italy hopeful of getting both teams through.
In the Men’s it was Italy and Sweden through as the Italians took out Englan in a close match 827-810 but Sweden smashed past Finland 924-636.
In the Womens it was Denmark going past Belgium 705-627 and joined by Italy who beat Germany 729-689.
In the finals it was Sweden beating Italy 851-813 and Denmark beating Italy also 768-740.
Masters
The women were first up on Saturday morning for the Masters and wins for Valerie Murat from France 2-1 as Germany’s Bianka Volkl-Brandt winning 2-1. The Netherland’s Debbie Zwart joined them winning 2-1 and Finland’s Reija Lunden winning 2-0. Belgium’s Veronique Periaux was through 2-0 and Denmark’s Pia Gronne Burkal advancing 2-0, Finally Germany’s Michaela Gobel-Janka through 2-1.
Through in the mens round 1 went Catalin Gheorghe from Romana taking out the top seed Gery Verbruggen 2-1 as Italian Alessandra Delcarmine won 2-0. Fellow Italian’s Marco Reviglio and Maurizio Celli were also through 2-0 each and Germany’s Bodo Koniecny advancing 2-1. Finland’s Petteri Salonen through 2-1 and Sweden’s Peter Hellsrom through 2-0. Finally German Michael Kramer adavnced to the next round.
Quarterfinals and through went Finland’s Petteri Salonen 2-1 and all the other matches done in just two games, Romania’s Catalin Gheorghe, Sweden’s Peter Hellstrom and Germany’s Michael Kramer all going to the semi finals.
For the Women, the happy countries advancing were Valerie Murat from France 2-0, Pia Gronne Burkal from Denmark 2-0, Belgium’s Veronique Periaux 2-1 and Germany’s Bianka Volkl-Brandt 2-1.
Germany vs Romania and Sweden verses Finland in the semis and wins for Germany and Finland as Kramer edged Gheroghe 2-1 and Salonen won through in two games against Hellstrom.
Making the finals in the Women were Murat from France 2-0 and Volkl-Brandt from Germany but only just, the last game a tie at 203 and the German winning on the roll off 10-8 and 2-1.
